About the Conference

Language plays an important role in  the modern society and represent diverse aspirations and needs, cultures, traditions, and practices. Literature represents a language or a people: culture and tradition. Literature introduces us to new worlds of experience. We learn about books and literature; we enjoy the comedies and the tragedies of poems, stories, and plays; and we may even grow and evolve through our literary journey with books. Linguistics offers different approaches to the study of how communities, groups and individuals communicate with one another.

To promote the importance of language learning and facilitate our understanding of literature, and broaden our knowledge of linguistics, ICRD is organizing the LLL 2013  in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which is the most vibrating city in South Asia.

The LLL 2013  will look into various issues in relation to the use and learning of different languages. This conference covers topics pertaining to applied linguistics and theoretical linguistics in various institutional, social, and cultural contexts. The conference also welcomes presentations based on studies conducted from inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary perspectives, involving research into language/s in different academic disciplines. LLL 2013  hopes  to provide an interesting platform for researchers, academics, language practitioners, policy makers and  postgraduate candidates, to share knowledge ,exchange ideas and establish academic relationships.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES 11 (ICOSAL 11) BHU, Varanasi January 23-25 2014

Call for Papers:

The 11th convocation of ICOSAL is scheduled to be held at BHU, Varanasi during  23-25 January, 2014.

ICOSAL is an international forum of scholars from across the globe that deliberates on various aspects of the languages of South Asia. The previous Conferences have attracted a large number of senior and young Indian and foreign scholars to participate. Four of the ten conferences were hosted by the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University. Six conferences of ICOSAL have been held in India at Punjabi University, University of Hyderabad, Annamalai University, Osmania University, and Aligarh Muslim University. Banaras Hindu University is hosting the 11th conference.

The proceedings of the Ist ICOSAL have been edited by L. V. Khokholova and published under the title Vagabharati in 1998. The proceedings of the 5th ICOSAL have been edited by Colin Masica in 2007 under the title New perspectives on South Asian Languages: Grammar & Semantics. The 8th ICOSAL proceedings, edited by  A. R. Fatihi have appeared under the title Language vitality in South Asia. The proceedings of the 10th ICOSAL will appear soon under the joint editorship of Hans Henry Hock and Alice Davison.

The areas to be deliberated upon at the Conference [ICOSAL 11] are as follows:

Phonology, Morphology and Syntax; Semantics and Pragmatics; Applied Linguistics; Language Technology; Language Pathology, Historical Linguistics, Cultural and Political history of South Asian Languages; Language Endangerment and Language Policies; Divergent development of South Asian Languages. Sanskrit Grammatical Tradition; Tamil Grammatical Tradition; Writing Systems; Emergence of New Literary Languages in SA; Textual Criticism and epistemology; Theatre in South-Asia; Relevance of Classical South Asian Literatures in Contemporary World.

The Australian Authors: Critical Assessment Series

CALL FOR PAPERS
This critical project will involve the following authors: Patrick White, David Malouf, Judith Wright and Peter Carey. The tentative titles of the volumes in the series are:

• Judith Wright: Poet and Conservationist
• Re-imagining the Australian Nation: A Study of Patrick White’s Novels
• Race, Cultures and Ethnicity in David Malouf’s Novels
• History, Myth and Re-writing: A Study of Peter Carey’s Novels

I hope you will be interested in this project and contribute your paper on the topics mentioned above.
Concept Note:
Australian literature has been included as a distinct component in many major universities in India. The major Australian authors mentioned are already included in the syllabi of the universities. This critical series is intended to cater to the needs of teachers, students and researchers engaged in the dissemination of Australian Studies in India.
These four authors chosen for the series may be regarded as four major pillars in the history of Australian literary culture. The critical rationale for choosing these authors is that they represent diverse ramification of their creative ideology. Since the rise of cultural nationalism in the post-Confederation period and the rapid industrialisation with the emergence of the gold-diggers, squatters and prospectors, Australian cultural landscape underwent multiple transformations. These authors represent the developing horizons of Australian literary culture in order to make sense of diverse subfields that they iconise in their creative endeavour. This diversity is evident in their specific attempts to experiment with the tradition that they inherit.
Judith Wright, for instance, holds a unique position in terms of developing a tripartite critical position in the perception of her specific self as a woman, her preoccupations with the landscape and her role as a conservationist.
Patrick White interrogates the questions of cultural nationalism in terms of re-mapping the Australian history and culture. Starting his career as a jackaroo and projecting it significantly in his first novel A Happy Valley, he begins to construct the narratives of Australian history in his novels.
David Malouf questions the intriguing problematic of identity and nationalism in his novels. His mixed racial background, interpolated by his perceptions of individual identity and culture, lends a multicultural colour to his novels. While in An Imaginary Life, he remythicises the Ovid legend, he questions the problem of Australian identity in The Great World by re-transforming the Buckley narrative relating to the settlement history of Australia.
Peter Carey, who has won the Booker prize twice, is the most prolific writer of Australia. Though he relocated in the USA, he has continued to re-tell and re-mythicise the Australian narratives of history. He re-writes the Ned Kelly Legend (True History of the Kelly Gang), transforms the Dickensian narrative (Jack Maggs), takes issues with the early settlement history (Bliss) or even experiments with the travelogue form in the tradition of an “Australian Abroad”.

UGC Sponsored National Seminar at TIHU COLLEGE, Assam | FEMINISM AND WOMEN’S TEXTS IN NORTH EAST INDIA

Seminar Outline
Feminism has generated interest and debates amongst people all over the world, and India is no exception to this critical experience. In Indian literature, feminism has been used as a modest attempt to evaluate women’s position under prevailing socio-cultural conditions. However, for analysing the social condition of women in India, it is by far fallacious to think in terms of Western concepts, because the experiences of Western women do not neatly fit into the Indian socio-cultural context. Hence, there is an urgent need for the formation of an indigenous feminist ideology embedded in our own culture and traditions in India. But, the task of exploring the territories of Indian feminism is not an easy one, since the concept of Indian womanhood does not present a clear, distinctive or homogeneous form. Analogically, in the diversity of the country itself, Indian women are deeply linked to their distinctive social, cultural, religious and regional features, and their identity is multi-layered and shifting.
Mapping the status of Indian women would become fragmentary without knowing the conditions of the women in Northeast India.  Northeast India is the habitat of different ethnic groups, both tribal and non tribal and where both patriarchal and matriarchal control co-exists, the status of women for various reasons does not differ from that of the mainstream India. Women, here too, are oppressed, marginalized; and the overall condition of the womenfolk of the region is quite disillusioning. Moreover, this region has now turned into a conflict zone under insurgency or militancy, again devastating the lives of the women both physically and mentally.
Almost every language of the Northeast region has thrown up some remarkable women writers, sensitive, outspoken and critical of the state of affairs in the region. They have responded to gender issues in the regional and national context questioning the complicity of power structures with patriarchy. Women writers like Indira Goswami, Nirupama Borgohain, Temsula Ao, Mamang Dai, Arupa Patangia Kalita, Easterine Iralu, and many others have poignantly captured many unforgettable stories of women registering their protest against patriarchal hegemony. So, the Seminar would attempt to find out a distinctively female literary tradition in Northeast India, and will try to hear the authentic female voice or share women’s real experiences, which are transparently available in women’s texts. The seminar will also try to form a substantial platform to open women’s texts in regional languages to various radical readings and even relate texts to their global counterparts. Finally, the seminar seeks to bring out the women’s writings of Northeast India where the feminist upsurge is recognizably strong but awaiting a wider critical attention.

Journey of the Book: From Manuscript to Digital, National Seminar, Pune, 23-25th September, 2013

Call for Papers

The present seminar aims at considering this interdisciplinary nature of book history, by setting up a platform for scholars, researchers, people from the publishing industry, new media scholars and students to initiate a dialogue regarding the scope and future of this area of study particularly in India. There is no denying that book history is still largely dominated by American and European academies. Jadavpur University, Kolkata was the first institution in India which started teaching book history as an optional course to its post-graduate students. In Pune University, we introduced the course again as an optional module to our post-graduate students in the year 2010. As Abhijit Gupta and Swapan Chakravorty note, “It has been an intriguing feature of book history studies worldwide that most taught courses in this field have originated in departments of literature, rather than say history or economics. On the other hand, much opposition to book history has also emanated from literature departments. One suspects that in India, some constituencies in English studies might feel threatened rather than empowered by the methods of book history. Thanks to a lingering colonial hangover, English studies in India have been unable to reduce its overwhelming dependence on literature produced in the British isles.”

Why has book history as a discipline, not taken off in India? India has a rich literature that extends further back in time than that of any European country. However, the tools of preservation and quantification have been two major obstacles in the development of book history in India. When book history took off in Western Europe, it relied heavily on quantification. The sources were always imperfect, but, however, flawed or distorted, the statistics provided enough material for book historians to construct a picture of the literary culture. Does a comparable source exist in India?

The present seminar intends to raise and address similar questions by focusing on the history of material texts and providing a forum for research across disciplines and across periods, for all those interested in the history of the book, bibliography, histories and theories of reading, and the intersections between intellectual history and material culture, including the creation, production, publication, distribution, reception, transmission, editing and subsequent history of texts as material objects in manuscript, print, digital media or other forms. The seminar will attempt largely to address the following areas:

• Pre-print cultures
  The advent of print and print-cultures
  Book trade
  Print history in colonial and post-colonial India
  Book illustrations
  Censorship
  The Politics of Publishing and Publishers
  History of Reading and Readers
  Books and the New Media
  Archives (Print and digital)

These topics are only suggestive; one is free to raise and address questions pertaining to other aspects book history in India not mentioned in the list above.

Perspective of the seminar

‘Journalism’ the concrete form of the freedom of expression has grown in power over a period of time. Constitution of India guarantees to the citizen the right to “Freedom of Speech and Expression”. All freedoms are subject to reasonable restrictions, and are entailed responsibilities. In a democracy everyone is accountable to the people, and so is the media. The press is an indispensable pillar of democracy. Media not only reports but acts as a bridge between the state and the public.
Ethics is a code of values. In the context of the press, “Ethics” may be described as a set of moral principles or values which guide the conduct of journalism. High speed global access to information via the internet gives rapid rise to a host of new ethical issues regarding security, privacy, secrecy, international sovereignty and so on. The responsibilities and liabilities of working journalists and of the journalistic institutions for and within which they work, now it is being treated from the commercial point of view and has expanded to include advertising, entertainment and so on. One important set of ethical issues has to do with the overallsocial utility of advertising. Does a hungry or unemployed man want entertainment- or food and a job? The seminar intends to explore the following issues:

1. Freedom of the press and their responsibility
2. Media and democracy
3. Media and advertising
4. Media and entertainment
5. Media ownership and its effect on press performance
6. The role of media in India
7. Freedom of the Indian press and Press Council of India

Call for abstracts and papers
Interested academicians and scholars in the field are requested to submit full paper along with abstract (within 300 words) positively by 31^st July, 2013. Full paper and abstract should be computer typed and printed on A4 size paper with one and half spacing. Each paper should have a separate title page, author’s name, mailing address, phone number and email address (if any). Selected papers will be presented in the seminar. Accommodation for the outstation delegates will be available on advance information and payment of `200/- per day per person. T.A. will be provided only to the invited resource persons.

Access to the venue
The college is situated on the State Highway (12A) between Siliguri and Cooch Behar via Mathabhanga. The Mathabhanga town is about 32 Kms. from Falakata Railway Station and about 47 Kms. from New Cooch Behar Railway Station.
